We have a thorough understanding of the causes of ice damming. We will make an inspection of your home's exterior and attic space to determine the best solution for your ice dam problems. We will then provide you with infromation empowering you to make the best decision. For some, it may be a simple repair. For others, the remedy maybe a combination of ventilation, insulation, underlayments and Roof Ice Melt Systems.

The best place to start in preventing ice dams from forming is by stopping the air heated in your living space from entering the attic space. This is best accomplished by "air sealing". This is the practice of sealing of gaps in your house walls and ceiling. Often can/recessed lights, exhaust vents, plumbing and electrical runs create "holes" which let hot air escape upward into your attic. Properly closing off these paths is the single most effective way to slow ice build up.
Secondly, a proper amount of insulation is necessary - R49. This is the equivalent of over 18" of fiberglass insulation. Even more effective is the use of closed cell foam products. However, without proper air sealing techniques, additional insulation may not prove effective at preventing ice dams.
Ventilation is another valuable tool, but should only be considered with air sealing and insulation improvements. Ventilation alone cannot keep up with winter conditions when hot air can freely escape your living spaces into the attic. Don't be fooled by the "it works just like a chimney - cool air from the soffits pushes the hot air out through the ridge vent" line.
Finally, we understand that even with improvements in air sealing, insulation, and ventilation, ice dams can and do still form. Energy from the sun, fluctuating temperatures, and the insulating effect of snow the roof all combine to short circuit our best efforts. Sometimes, too, it is just not practical to remove either the interior or exterior of you home to accomplish the above mentioned passive fixes to ice dams.
